From the opening notes of his original instrumental "When Mandolins Dream," Chris Thile quickly establishes his total command of the instrument. He launches into the details of great right-hand technique: how to hold the pick, correct hand position and wrist action, how to get a good balance between up and down strokes, and numerous exercises for powerful practice sessions. Tunes such as "Hop the Fence," "Red-Haired Boy" and "Swallowtail Jig" give you the practical application you need to put all this into practice. In his approach to pick stroke theory—the proper way to use down and up strokes—Chris shows its importance in achieving a smooth, flowing style. He provides exercises for releasing hand tension and smooth cross-picking that will make all the difference when you are playing tunes in a jam session. The left hand gets the brunt of mandolin problems, often because of bad hand position. Chris shows you how to avoid stress at the wrist by keeping fingers close to the fingerboard, and correct scale playing to enhance speed and clarity. Using "Ode To A Butterfly" to illustrate smooth and efficient fretting, he teaches pull-offs and hammer-ons, position shifting and jumping, ornamentation, three-octave scales and arpeggio sets. You'll get exercises (such as playing major, minor and diminished triads up and down the neck) and scales that are perfect for warming up both hands and learning the notes on the fingerboard. Chris closes this unique video lesson with another astonishing performance, this time his original "Raining at Sunset," which will certainly inspire you to reach for higher levels on the mandolin.
